Special Exhibition : Healing Japanese Art ―Jakuchū’s Solace and Togyū’s Comfort―

Today, when daily life is scrambled and the state of the world remains unstable, “Mindfulness”, “Well Be-ing”, and “Chill” have become the current keywords, words bearing a sense of our emotional fluctuations.
The context that has brought those terms to the fore is the need to consider our own interior state and find healing for our hearts. In these disturbing times, the Yamatane Museum of Art is holding an exhibition that will, through appreciating Japanese art, heal our spirits.

Term: 2 Dec (Sat.)2023 – 4 Feb (Sun.) 2024
Open: 10 am – 5 pm (Last admission at 4:30 pm)
Closed: Mondays [Open Mon 8 Jan (national holiday), closed Tue 9 Jan, closed Fri 29 Dec – Tue 2 Jan (year-end and New Year holidays)]

Highlights of this exhibition

The heartwarming Jakuchū and Rosetsu’s ‘Yurukawa’

The gentle, charming images painted by Itō Jakuchū(伊藤若冲) and Nagasawa Rosetsu(長沢芦雪) are a delight. Jakuchū’s Hotei(布袋図) (private collection) and Fushimi Dolls(伏見人形図), with their simple, kind expressions, and Rosetsu’s cute, frolicking Puppies with Chrysanthemums(菊花子犬図) (private collection) are captivating. These richly humorous works bring smiles to our faces.

Fluffy animals, adorable children

Paintings of adorable animals and children, such as Okumura Togyū(奥村土牛)’s Rabbits(兎) and Koide Narashige(小出楢重)’s Standing Figure of a Child(子供立像), for which his own child was the model, communicate the affection that the artist has for the cherished subject of the painting. Those charming sights soothe the heart and kindle warm emotions.

Relax at the museum

Standing before Kawai Gyokudō(川合玉堂)’s After a Mountain Shower(山雨一過), with its depiction of the ever-inspiring Japanese natural world, and Uemura Shōen(上村松園)’s Listening to a Cuckoo’s Call(杜鵑を聴く), which makes one imagine delightful sounds, is a relaxing experience. The exhibits also include works such as Okumura Togyū’s Dainichi Buddha(浄心), which the artist himself created to soothe and heal his own heart.
