How did Utagawa Hiroshige draw Mountains and Seas? Exhibition at Ōta Memorial Museum of Art

Highlights of the Exhibition

What scenery did Hiroshige actually see?

Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) was an Ukiyo-e artist who gained popularity among the general public at the end of the Edo period as a leading painter of landscapes. Along with famous landmarks in Edo, Hiroshige also painted nature scenes of mountains and seas in various countries. From his youth, Hiroshige had been depicting famous places along the Tokaido Highway, far from Edo, and it is known that he traveled to various places such as Koshu and Boso from around his 40s, and his later works are thought to reflect his experiences of capturing nature on his travels.

Religious Beliefs rooted in the Mountains and Seas

The exhibition also introduces the process of creating these works, including the famous places that Hiroshige actually visited and the places he depicted by adapting illustrations from existing geography books. The exhibition will also provide insights into the various forms of religious beliefs rooted in the mountains and seas of each region, such as shrines built on steep mountains and grand torii gates on the sea. This exhibition will allow visitors to learn more about Hiroshige’s work while enjoying the spectacular scenery depicted in his Ukiyo-e paintings as if they were on a journey.
